Somniare Somniare #1 eBook DT Dyllin

Trapped in the place only dreamers go. But this is more like a nightmare. Remy was killed and to escape death she fled to Somnaire. She is a witch with powers, but she faces one treacherous turn after another. With the help of her familiar and Voo Dolly a hand made voo doo doll come to life, she searches for her way out.
I have read almost all of D.T. Dyllin’s books and I have enjoyed them all. This one is no exception. Remy starts the story very sure of who she is, but as she traverses the dangerous dream world of Somnaire, she finds out that there is so much she still doesn't know. About herself, her family and, her future.
This story was fantastic! I give Somnaire 4.5 stars!

Somniare Somniare #1 eBook DT Dyllin Reviews

ARC received in exchange for an honest review.

Hmm, now this is an interesting read. I don't often read books where you have a world of dreams, where of course everything there is out to get you and kill you. Also the main characters are simply fascinating. The PNR really makes the story so much better, having a normal human in a dream world would be compared to this plot be just so boring and uneventful. The blurb tells you a lot about what's going to happen but there are some twists I sure didn't see coming and wow did I like them. Since this is not a stand-alone book I can't wait for the sequel to come out. I have a feeling we haven't seen anything yet and the second book better not disappoint!

Anyway, back to this story. The main character, Remy (can't help but remember Remy from Real Series by Katy Evans, lol) is a strange, kinda spoiled but with a good heart character. At first I didn't know what o make of her but at the end she really did grow on me and now I think she's actually a pretty cool character, flaws and all. What surprised me the most is her sexual orientation. I won't go into details, since that would give away too much of the plot but I liked how the author put her spin on this whole relationship thing. That was definitely refreshing and I don't read many books that have that type of sexuality in them, so that to me was a big plus and made me like the story even more. What I can say about her love interest is that I get it, the whole reason why things happened the way they did but I would have loved to see more romance, as in more touchy feelings scenes. Since this is a YA there is obviously no sex but for this story it works quite good.
Of course, what's a good story without a villain, right? Well, let's just say that I'm really looking forward to the sequel since the fun for them is only beginning.

For such a short story there was a lot going on and I think PNR fans will like it. )
Rating 4/5 Penguins

Quick Reasons interesting and entertaining; LOVE the twists and turns; endearing, creepy, unique characters; not sure what I was expecting going into this, but this wasn't it; I devoured this book; sort of star-crossed lovers; some of the plot points were confusing, but for good reason

Huge thanks to D.T. Dyllin, Tik Tok Press, and Giselle @ Xpresso Book Tours for sending me a copy of this title in exchange for an honest review! This in no way altered my read of or opinions on this book.

---"I wanted to practice doing love spells."

She laughed. "Love spells? With a voodoo doll? Remy, baby, that's not what a voodoo doll is for."---

Let's start with the characters. This motley crew holds some of the most entertaining, unique, and diverse characters I've come across in the paranormal/fantasy genre--which is awesome! From page one, these characters practically throw themselves into the real world--they are vibrant and snarky and, while not "realistic," still so very REAL in their reactions/interactions.

The world was also colorful and filled with the twists and turns of dreams--which is, actually, a good thing, as this world is made up by dreams and nightmares. I had a ton of fun following Remy and her companions on their journey to self-discovery and the truth. Of course, most of both of these were found by Remy--the rest of the characters were just pulled along for the ride. Regardless, the world and the characters were all thoughtfully crafted and well-rounded.

---"I love you," I whispered, the words escaping from me against my will. Because that was the thing about loving someone... you could be angry, feel as if you want to kill them even, but deep down you know you can never walk away. Love binds for all eternity. And if you can walk away, it wasn't real love, at least not the soul-deep kind.---

I will admit--the beginning of this book was super confusing. D.T. Dyllin tosses readers right into the thick of the story--no answers, all questions--and expects readers to put aside the fact they know nothing about the world or these characters and just go along for the ride. Luckily, I'm just such a reader--but not everybody is. So let me warn you a little before you jump head-first into these pages the beginning is confusing. Our main character not only has some holes in her memory, but is also pretty easily distracted by her hormones. The prose doesn't always give you the answers you think you need right away, but instead trickles them to readers slowly over time. Be patient--the pieces will, eventually, all come together, if you give them time to.

Trigger warning for sensitive readers this book explores subjects like emotional abuse; betrayal; murder/attempted murder... I'm sure there are others that I've missed or forgotten about, but just a warning--some of the scenes are a bit difficult to get through, especially for readers who are easily triggered. Please take care of yourselves!

---Makoto wrenched himself away from me, his eyes glowing gold. "This isn't the time or place," he said, his voice breaking an octave lower than normal. "I mean, how many times have you complained about characters, in one of those human fiction books you love, having intimate moments in places that seemed oddly inconvenient?"---

This was a super entertaining, snarky, and unique read from page one. I was enthralled throughout--though, at times, just a bit more than confused. However--have patience! The pieces do get put together in a coherent, well-crafted fashion. I definitely recommend this read to lovers of paranormal fantasy, uniquely diverse characters, and an enthralling dream world that borders on the darker end of the spectrum. This was a great read; I can't wait to see what D.T. Dyllin does in the future!
My review is based on the Audiobook. I really enjoyed Somniare and the Dream Realm that it takes place in. There were many different characters that Remy meets on her journey that are not your average magic creatures - shifter/vampire etc. and that was very refreshing for me. Johanna Fairview does a remarkable job as narrator. She gives each character their own distinct voice which allows the listener to easily follow the story. I look forward to more from this Author & Narrator.
