The Baron of New Romney, Nicholas Vaughn, loved his job, title and home, even though it was considered a Manor house and not a castle. He hoped that the King would reward him for being the best Baron of New Romney by building him a castle. Muriel Draper was a free woman and a spinster. Her father died a week ago and by rights she should have been made a Guild member, but something was wrong and the Guild members were trying to take her possessions for debts they said her father owed them. Muriel also owed rent to the Baron. He was fascinated by her and told her that she and her brother could live in the manor and pay off her debts by making clothes at the castle. Muriel becomes involve with some of the Baron's problems and tries to help him, without the Baron finding out. Well...the story becomes a mystery and...well read the book and find out. I have read many of Elizabeth Rose novels. Her ability to pull the reader into the story and make them feel as if they are among the characters is outstanding. Her books are filled with action, steamy passion (not erotica), mystery, intrigue, and even some humor. The characters are full of personality and wit and the interaction is always suspenseful and interesting. The reader will find themselves telling the characters what to say next.
Baron’s Quest is book 1 of The Barons of Cinque Ports series. It takes the reader on an adventure with Nicholas Vaughn, Lord of New Romney, and Muriel Draper, a simple merchant’s daughter.
Muriel, known as a spinster, someone who spins wool, finds the responsibility of her brother and herself on her shoulders after her father’s murder. Due to actions of her father, she and her brother has been denied the privilege of membership to the Cloth maker’s Guild. This, along with other debts and rent becoming past due, makes it difficult to sell her wares and earn money.
The first time Nicholas meets Muriel, she is causing havoc on his docks. He eventually discovers she is behind in rent owed to him. Trying to flee from his presence to have more time to pay she tries to run and hide. However, she unknowingly hides on his ship in which he is about to set sail. He finds her and demands she work for him as his personal clothier until the debt is paid in full.
The story is filled with mystery of the circumstances surrounding her father’s death, and what she discovers about the Guild. The reader will find themselves turning page after page to find out what happens between a man who is of Noble blood and a lady who is only a merchant’s daughter.
I highly recommend this author, Elizabeth Rose, and anything she has written. After reading book one you will anxiously await book two and three. Other series written by her include the Tangled Tale Series, and wonderful medieval romance, which are my favorites. I have read the Daughters of the Dagger series twice as well as listen to the audio versions. Simply fantastic!!!
I have read just about every book Elizabeth Rose has written and she gets better with each book regardless of which genre it is. Medieval, western, paranormal or contemporary each book holds and draws you into the story.
The Barons Quest is no exception, it is in my humble opinion a very well written story. The characters are strong, bold and likable.
Nicholas and Muriel are worlds apart in status yet complement each other in character.
Muriel really leads Nicholas on a merry chase when they first meet. When Nicholas spies her boarding his ship he traps her in the hold. Since Muriel is late with her rent Nicholas takes the one thing she has of her mother, her ring. She works for the Baron to earn her ring back. She manages to get her brother "employed" by the Baron at his Manor, yet she yearns for more that is so out of her reach. With the death of her father she must work hard so she doesn't lose the business her father built even if they will not accept her into the guild.
Nicholas dreams of having a castle to show that he too is a powerful Baron. With the arrival of his father and brother into his home he must put his feelings for Muriel aside. As they ride the waves of romance they must also solve the mystery of the possible theft at the docks and mayhap the murder of Muriel's father.
The story is full of suspense, humorous and a little steamy. The secondary characters are witty and humorous while at the same time you feel like you should give them a goo swift kick in the rump.
Can't wait for the next book in the series.
